Overview:
The Citizen AQ4070-05A was released in 2020 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of The Citizen, the company's flagship collection of high-accuracy everyday watches.

Limited to only 350 pieces, the watch combines two very different sides of Japanese craftsmanship: a traditional Tosa Washi paper dial decorated by hand with pure platinum leaf and Citizen's highly sophisticated Caliber A060 Eco-Drive movement, accurate to an incredible ±5 seconds per year.

The natural fibers of the Washi create a soft, highly textured surface, while individually scattered fragments of platinum catch the light across the dial. Because both the paper and platinum decoration vary naturally, no two dials are exactly identical.

History:
The Citizen was established in 1995 as Citizen's flagship line of practical luxury watches, built around exceptional accuracy, legibility, durability and long-term ownership.

For the collection's 25th anniversary in 2020, Citizen created several special models combining its modern Eco-Drive technology with traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The AQ4070-05A was the second of these anniversary releases and was limited to just 350 individually numbered examples.

The centerpiece is its Tosa Tengujo-shi Washi dial. Washi has historically been used throughout Japanese culture for applications including shoji screens, lanterns and traditional artwork. Its fibrous structure is particularly suitable for Eco-Drive because light can penetrate the spaces between the natural fibers and reach the solar cell positioned underneath the dial.

Citizen went considerably further for the anniversary model. Using the traditional Sunago-maki 「砂子蒔き」 technique, artisans scattered fragments of pure platinum leaf produced in Kanazawa across the Washi surface. The combination creates a dial whose texture and reflections vary from one example to another.

The model also debuted the redesigned Eagle emblem created for The Citizen's 25th anniversary, appearing prominently on the dial, crown and caseback.
