Model: Seiko Prospex Alpinist SPB503 “Tealpine”

Overview:
The Seiko SPB503 represents a new generation of the modern Alpinist, combining the familiar compass-bezel architecture of the collection with a striking turquoise sunburst dial. More importantly for longtime Alpinist collectors, this generation sees the return of the historic “Alpinist” script prominently displayed on the dial, reconnecting the modern Prospex model with the identity of its predecessors. Seiko officially describes the dial as teal, while the US catalogue lists its color as turquoise.

It is the first Alpinist since the highly coveted SSASS Grail Alpinist to have a turqoise dial.

History:
The Alpinist lineage dates back to the 1959 Laurel Alpinist, Seiko’s first watch specifically developed for sports and outdoor use. Over subsequent decades, the collection evolved considerably, eventually producing some of the most recognizable Japanese domestic-market field watches of the 1990s and 2000s.

Introduced in 2025, the SPB503 forms part of a new generation of mechanical Alpinists powered by the three-day Caliber 6R55. One of its most significant design details is the return of the historic Alpinist logotype beneath the Seiko signature at 12 o’clock. Seiko specifically highlights this feature as a connection to the original Laurel Alpinist, whose dial also prominently carried the Alpinist name.

Closing Note:
The SPB503 is an important modern evolution of the Alpinist rather than simply another dial variation. Its turquoise sunburst dial gives the watch a distinctive identity within a collection traditionally associated with darker green, black and cream tones, while the return of the Alpinist name to the dial creates a much stronger visual connection with the historical lineage. Combined with the upgraded 72-hour Caliber 6R55, 200-meter water resistance and classic internal compass bezel, the SPB503 successfully brings some of the personality of earlier Alpinists into a thoroughly modern package.
