Seiko SARW013 Urushi Lacquer
Model: Seiko Presage SARW013 Urushi Lacquer Dial
Overview:
Seiko Presage SARW013, an early example of Seiko’s Japanese craftsmanship-focused Presage watches, featuring a genuine hand-finished Urushi lacquer dial and the higher-frequency Caliber 6R27 automatic movement.
The centerpiece is its deep black Urushi dial. Unlike conventional painted or coated surfaces, Urushi develops its characteristic depth and gloss through the repeated application and polishing of natural Japanese lacquer. Against the rich black surface, the white Roman numerals and traditional Maki-E frosted gold accents create a distinctly traditional appearance, while the power reserve and pointer-date complications showcase the mechanical nature of the watch.
This example has also just been serviced, with the 28,800 vph Caliber 6R27 running well and ready for regular use.
History:
The SARW013 belongs to the earlier generation of Seiko Presage models that helped establish the collection's connection with traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Its dial was created using Urushi, a natural lacquer with a history in Japanese decorative arts stretching back thousands of years. Producing an Urushi watch dial requires multiple layers of lacquer to be individually applied, dried and polished, gradually building the deep, glossy black appearance for which the material is known.
Seiko's Urushi Presage dials from this period were produced under the supervision of lacquer craftsman Isshu Tamura, whose work helped establish Urushi as one of the signature traditional crafts subsequently associated with the Presage collection.
