Overview:
Seiko Presage Cocktail Time SSA457J1, a 2022 STAR BAR Limited Edition and one of the first two models to showcase Seiko’s then-new Caliber 4R72.

As someone who generally prefers neither open-heart nor skeletonized dials, the SSA457 escaped my attention for quite some time. In person, however, the execution works exceptionally well. Its rich crimson-burgundy sunburst dial pairs beautifully with the gold-toned mechanical components visible through the skeletonized display, creating considerably more depth than photographs initially suggest.

Another unusual characteristic is its no-date layout. While date windows and pointer-date displays are common throughout the Cocktail Time collection, the SSA457 eliminates the date entirely, allowing the dial and exposed movement to remain the visual focus.

History:
Released in October 2022, the SSA457 was created through Seiko Presage’s ongoing collaboration with Hisashi Kishi, owner and head bartender of STAR BAR in Ginza, Tokyo. It was released alongside the lighter-colored SSA455, with each reference limited to 5,000 pieces worldwide.

The two watches were inspired by original cocktails created by Kishi to represent different aspects of Tokyo. While one cocktail used a lighter and brighter appearance, the SSA457 took inspiration from the crimson-colored interpretation, representing the mixture of classical tradition and vibrant modernity found throughout the city.

The skeletonized construction itself has a direct connection to the cocktail theme. Seiko designed the openings to resemble ripples spreading across the surface of a freshly stirred cocktail, originating from the balance wheel—the mechanical “heart” of the watch—and radiating outward across the dial.

The SSA457 is an interesting departure from what most collectors picture when they think of a Cocktail Time. Instead of relying solely on Seiko’s familiar deeply patterned radial dials, the watch makes the mechanical movement itself an integral part of the cocktail-inspired design.

The concept behind the skeletonization is particularly clever. The balance wheel forms the heart of the composition, with the openworked arcs surrounding it representing ripples spreading outward across the surface of a cocktail. Through these openings, the rubies, gears and gold-toned components of the 4R72 become part of the dial rather than simply something viewed through the caseback.

For someone who generally doesn't gravitate toward open-heart or skeletonized watches, the SSA457 is one of the rare exceptions where the exposed movement feels intuitive to the design rather than added simply for visual effect. The rich burgundy sunburst finish contrasts particularly well against the gold-toned movement, while the absence of a date window gives the watch an unusually clean layout for a Cocktail Time.
