Up for sale is the seldom-seen Seiko Sports 200 SJE061, an obscure international-market counterpart to the original green “Red Alpinist” and an important piece of 1990s Alpinist history.
Most Alpinist enthusiasts are familiar with the green SCVF009 produced for the Japanese domestic market. Far fewer are aware that Seiko also produced the closely related Sports 200 series for export markets, consisting of black, cream and green variants. The green SJE061 shares its fundamental design, case and high-grade 4S15 movement with the SCVF009, but replaces the familiar red “Alpinist” dial signature with “SPORTS 200.” Collector research identifies these models as being intended for European and Southeast Asian markets.
History:
Seiko officially dates the revival of the Alpinist to 1995, more than three decades after the original Laurel Alpinist of 1959. Designed for mountaineering enthusiasts, this new generation introduced the design that would ultimately become synonymous with the modern Alpinist: a compact stainless-steel case, 20-bar water resistance, distinctive Arabic numerals and the now-iconic green dial.
The Japanese-market range included the SCVF005, SCVF007 and green SCVF009. Alongside them appeared three extremely similar Sports 200 export references: the black SJE057, cream SJE059 and green SJE061. The SJE061 shares its case, movement, hands and fundamental design with the SCVF009, while using different dial and caseback branding.
This makes the SJE061 particularly interesting. It is effectively the international-market sibling of the original green SCVF009 Alpinist and predates the far better-known green SARB017 that would later carry the design to a much larger audience.

The SJE061 occupies a fascinating position within the Alpinist lineage. At its core, it is essentially the export-market counterpart to the legendary original green SCVF009, sharing the same compact architecture, green-and-gold aesthetic and sophisticated Caliber 4S15 while carrying the much more obscure Sports 200 identity.
The movement itself is an important part of the appeal. Seiko describes the compact 4S15 as a high-performance mechanical caliber, and the company has specifically cited the difficulty of mass-producing the 4S movement and the short period these watches remained on the market as reasons the original generation became scarce.
With the later SARB017 becoming one of the most recognizable Seiko watches of the modern era, the SJE061 provides an opportunity to own a considerably more obscure piece from the very beginning of that design lineage—a green 4S15 Alpinist sibling originally produced for markets outside Japan.
