Overview:
The exceptionally rare Seiko 5 Lunar Calendar Ref. 6347-5000, produced in 1986 and powered by one of the most unusual mechanical movements found anywhere in Seiko’s vintage catalogue.

At first glance, the Seiko 5 branding might suggest a relatively conventional automatic watch. The 6347-5000 is anything but conventional. Inside is Seiko’s Caliber 6347A, an automatic mechanical movement incorporating a genuine moonphase display, an extraordinarily unusual complication for Seiko and one the company has never meaningfully revisited in its conventional mechanical watch collections.

The dial is equally unusual, combining a large moonphase display with a white sunburst-finished center, gold-tone fluted inner ring and a glittering outer section intended to evoke the appearance of stars across the night sky. Japanese vintage specialists document this exact dial construction on surviving original examples.

History:
The 6347 Lunar Calendar appeared in 1986, during an era when quartz technology dominated Seiko’s catalogue and mechanical watches occupied a very different position within the company than they had during the 1960s and 1970s. Multiple documented examples of the 6347-5000 date specifically to 1986.

This context makes the watch particularly fascinating. Seiko had already produced numerous moonphase watches using quartz technology and would continue experimenting with the complication through electronic movements, yet the 6347 stands virtually alone as Seiko’s mechanical automatic interpretation of the complication.

The Seiko 5 logo also takes on greater significance here. One of the original principles behind Seiko 5 was automatic winding, and underneath what appears to be an unusually decorative Seiko 5 is a genuinely mechanical moonphase mechanism.

The 6347 is one of the great anomalies hidden within Seiko’s enormous back catalogue.

Seiko has produced mechanical alarms, chronographs, GMTs, perpetual calendars, high-beat movements and virtually every form of electronic complication imaginable, yet the company’s experiments with the mechanical moonphase were remarkably brief. The 6347 family remains the exceptional example of Seiko combining an automatic mechanical movement with a moonphase display.

That makes the 6347-5000 particularly interesting within the Seiko 5 story. Today, Seiko 5 is predominantly associated with affordable everyday mechanical watches, but models such as this demonstrate just how diverse the name has been throughout its history.

More remarkably, nearly four decades later, Seiko has produced countless quartz and electronic interpretations of the moonphase but has never established a conventional mechanical moonphase as a recurring part of its modern Seiko catalogue. For a manufacturer with such an enormous mechanical history, that makes the short-lived Caliber 6347 family a fascinating exception and the 6347-5000 one of the most historically interesting Seiko 5 models to collect.
