Overview:
Released in 2012, the Grand Seiko SBGM031 is a limited-edition mechanical GMT created to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Grand Seiko’s first mechanical GMT movement. Production was limited to only 1,000 pieces worldwide.
The centerpiece is its incredibly rich deep-blue dial, contrasted beautifully by gold-tone hour markers and a matching gold GMT hand. The blue is particularly difficult to capture accurately in photographs, transitioning from a dark royal/navy blue to a considerably brighter and more saturated shade depending on the lighting and viewing angle.
At just 39.5mm in diameter, the SBGM031 also retains the elegant and highly wearable proportions associated with Grand Seiko’s earlier mechanical GMTs.
History:
Grand Seiko introduced its first mechanical GMT caliber, the 9S56, in 2002. Ten years later, Seiko commemorated the anniversary with the SBGM031 limited to 1,000 pieces.
The SBGM031 was fitted with the newer Caliber 9S66, providing approximately 72 hours of power reserve and an independently adjustable local hour hand for practical GMT functionality. The anniversary model also received a particularly distinctive blue rotor constructed from titanium and tungsten, visible through its sapphire exhibition caseback.
Originally priced at ¥483,000 including tax in Japan, the SBGM031 represented one of Grand Seiko’s more special mechanical GMT offerings of the period.

Closing Note:
The SBGM031 represents a particularly interesting period in Grand Seiko history. It combines the classical proportions and double-signed dial of the pre-2017 era with the modern 9S66 mechanical GMT movement and several details created specifically for the 10th-anniversary edition.
Its dial is undoubtedly the highlight. The combination of deep royal blue with warm gold markers and GMT hand creates a color scheme rarely seen among Grand Seiko’s standard-production mechanical GMTs, and the true depth and saturation of the blue is exceptionally difficult to reproduce accurately through photographs.
The blue anniversary rotor also makes the SBGM031 immediately recognizable from the caseback, while its 39.5mm diameter gives it exceptionally wearable proportions. With production limited to 1,000 examples worldwide, it remains a considerably less common and collectible alternative to Grand Seiko’s regular-production GMT models.
