Seiko SBWA001, one of the most historically significant watches ever produced by Seiko and the stainless-steel model that introduced Spring Drive technology commercially to the world in 1999.

Limited to only 500 pieces, the SBWA001 was the culmination of nearly two decades of research into an entirely new method of regulating a mainspring-powered watch. Today, Spring Drive has become synonymous with Grand Seiko, but its story began here before Spring Drive ever appeared on a Grand Seiko dial.

The SBWA001 is also an incredibly distinctive watch in its own right. Its unconventional stainless-steel case flows directly into one of the most unusual integrated bracelets Seiko has produced, while the exhibition caseback reveals the first-generation Caliber 7R68 Spring Drive movement underneath.

History:
The story of Spring Drive began with Seiko engineer Yoshikazu Akahane, who envisioned a watch combining the motive power of a traditional mainspring with the precision of electronic regulation. Development formally began in 1982, but creating a system efficient enough to operate solely from the tiny amount of electricity generated by the unwinding mainspring proved extraordinarily difficult.

After multiple development attempts, Seiko finally presented a functioning Spring Drive at Baselworld in 1998. The following year, the technology reached commercial production, and on December 11, 1999, the first Caliber 7R68 Spring Drive was released. Seiko itself describes Spring Drive as the world's first watch technology to combine mechanical driving force with quartz regulation.

The stainless-steel SBWA001 was limited to 500 pieces and retailed for ¥250,000 before tax. It was accompanied by the solid-gold SBWA002, while Credor offered the platinum GBLG999 using the closely related 7R78.

It would still be several years before Spring Drive entered Grand Seiko. The technology was subsequently developed into an automatic movement with a longer power reserve, eventually becoming one of the defining pillars of modern Grand Seiko.
