The design draws heavily from Seiko’s motorsport watches of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Seiko specifically states that the streamlined case and multi-row bracelet inherit design characteristics from a Speedtimer chronograph introduced in 1972, giving the SPB513 its distinctive vintage appearance.

The model also represents the first Speedtimer generation to utilize Seiko’s 6R-series automatic movement in this configuration, pairing the long-running Speedtimer identity with the modern 72-hour Caliber 6R55.
