Seiko Presage SARW053, a limited-edition Arita Porcelain model combining Seiko's mechanical watchmaking with one of Japan's oldest and most celebrated forms of traditional craftsmanship.
Limited to 2,000 pieces worldwide, the SARW053 features a genuine Arita porcelain dial whose glossy white surface beautifully showcases the characteristics that make porcelain so different from a conventional metal watch dial. Rather than appearing flat or printed, the dial possesses a subtle three-dimensional quality, with gentle curves around the power reserve and date displays and a distinctive glistening surface created through its glazing and firing process.
The result is a dial that can transition between brilliant pure white and subtle cooler tones depending on the surrounding light, with blue accents providing a distinctly Japanese contrast.
History:
Arita ware traces its history to the early 17th century in Arita, Saga Prefecture, where Japan's first porcelain was produced. Over the following four centuries, Arita became synonymous with Japanese porcelain craftsmanship and eventually gained recognition internationally, particularly throughout Europe.
Seiko first incorporated Arita porcelain into the Presage collection in 2019. Creating a porcelain watch dial presented challenges very different from producing conventional Arita ware: the material needed to be thin enough for a wristwatch while maintaining extremely precise dimensions and sufficient durability. Seiko therefore adopted a specially developed porcelain material more than four times harder than conventional porcelain.
The dials are produced under the supervision of master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi and his team at an Arita manufacturer whose history dates back to 1830. The porcelain is formed, fired at approximately 1,300°C, glazed by hand and fired again to produce its characteristic glossy surface.
The SARW053 followed in 2020 as a special limited edition of 2,000 pieces. Its design was inspired by “Suigetsu” the poetic image of the moon reflected upon the surface of water.

The SARW053 is an excellent showcase of what makes Seiko's Craftsmanship Series so interesting. Rather than simply recreating the appearance of porcelain on a conventional metal dial, Seiko worked directly with Arita craftsmen to adapt a centuries-old material and production technique to the extremely tight tolerances required for modern watchmaking.
Its glossy surface is particularly impressive in person. The glaze creates an almost glass-like sheen while the thickness and gentle curvature of the porcelain give the dial a depth that conventional painted or lacquered surfaces struggle to reproduce.
The SARW053 also carries a particularly Japanese design concept. Seiko intended its pure white porcelain and subtle blue elements to evoke moonlight reflecting from the surface of water, with crescent-moon details incorporated into the power-reserve indicator and seconds hand.
Under the supervision of Arita master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi, the SARW053 brings together over four centuries of Japanese porcelain tradition with Seiko's mechanical watchmaking in one of the more distinctive artisanal Presage releases of the period.
