Seiko 5 Sports SRPL91 “Gene Kranz” Limited Edition
Model: Seiko 5 Sports SRPL91 “Gene Kranz” – Heritage Design Re-creation Limited Edition
Overview:
The Seiko SRPL91 is a modern recreation of the vintage Seiko 5 Sports 6119-8460, a watch that has become affectionately known among collectors as the “Gene Kranz” after being worn by legendary NASA Flight Director Eugene “Gene” Kranz.
Kranz played a pivotal role throughout NASA's Apollo program and famously led the Mission Control team responsible for bringing Apollo 13 safely home following the catastrophic oxygen-tank failure in 1970. Photographs from the period show Kranz wearing the white-dial 6119-8460, giving an otherwise relatively obscure vintage Seiko a fascinating connection to one of the most important periods in spaceflight history.
The SRPL91 recreates that white-dial configuration remarkably faithfully, retaining the compact cushion-shaped case, vintage Seiko 5 logo, contrasting day/date display, rotating bezel and multi-row bracelet while upgrading the watch for modern everyday use.
History:
The original Seiko 5 Sports 6119-8460 appeared during the late 1960s and belonged to the early generation of Seiko 5 Sports watches. The white-dial version eventually became particularly collectible because of its association with Gene Kranz, who can be seen wearing the watch in period photographs from NASA's Mission Control.
In 2025, Seiko returned to this relatively obscure chapter of its history with the SRPL91 and SRPL93. The white SRPL91 recreates the configuration associated with Kranz, while the SRPL93 recreates the corresponding black-dial version.
Seiko went considerably further than simply borrowing the general aesthetic. The vintage “5” emblem returns at 12 o'clock, the unusual calendar arrangement reproduces the original with the day displayed against white and the date against black, and even the bidirectional rotating bezel and bracelet were designed to closely resemble their vintage counterparts. The watch is also delivered in special packaging inspired by the colors of the original period box.
Each version was produced as an individually numbered limited edition of 9,999 pieces.
