The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Ref. 7679 is a less commonly encountered variation of one of Oris’s most recognizable designs. This particular configuration stands out with its textured guilloché-style black dial, rose-gold-tone hands and markers, coin-edge bezel and original two-tone bracelet, giving the otherwise utilitarian Big Crown a considerably more elegant appearance.
At 40mm, the watch retains the traditional character of the historic Pointer Date while offering more substantial modern proportions and construction. During its production, this configuration retailed for over $2,000.
History:
The Big Crown Pointer Date traces its origins to 1938, when Oris developed a pilot-oriented watch featuring an oversized crown that could be easily operated while wearing gloves. Its other defining feature was the pointer-date complication, using a central hand rather than a conventional date window to indicate the date around the perimeter of the dial.
The Ref. 7679 is a modern interpretation of that historic formula. The oversized crown and central pointer-date hand remain immediately recognizable, but the 40mm stainless-steel construction, sapphire crystal, exhibition caseback and automatic Caliber 754 bring the design into the modern era.
