Orient Star WZ0071EJ, an exceptionally elusive tonneau-shaped model from Orient Star’s late-2000s catalogue and one of the more unusual designs produced by the brand during this period.
The centerpiece is its beautiful brown sunburst dial, which shifts considerably depending on the surrounding light. The curved dial and heavily domed rectangular crystal create substantial visual depth, causing the dial to transition from warm chocolate brown to much brighter bronze and copper-like shades as the watch moves on the wrist.
At 12 o’clock sits Orient Star’s signature power reserve indicator, while one of the watch’s strangest details can be found on the upper-right side of the case: a small rectangular pusher dedicated specifically to advancing the date. Contemporary specifications confirm this unusual external date-correction system.
History:
The WZ0071EJ was introduced in Japan in November 2007 as part of the Orient Star Classic Tonneau collection. Four dial variations were offered, with the brown WZ0071EJ originally priced at ¥63,000 including tax.
The Tonneau series had received relatively little attention compared with other Orient Star releases of the period.
More than fifteen years later, that obscurity has become part of the model’s appeal. The WZ0071EJ appears only infrequently on the secondary market, making it one of those Orient Stars that even seasoned Japanese-watch collectors may never have encountered in person.
“Tonneau” is the French word for barrel and is commonly used in watchmaking to describe cases with curved, barrel-like profiles. The shape has appeared throughout watchmaking history and is particularly associated today with watches such as the Franck Muller Cintrée Curvex and, in a much more contemporary interpretation, Richard Mille.

The WZ0071EJ is a great example of why exploring older Orient Star catalogues can be so rewarding. Rather than following the conventional round-case formula, Orient created a genuinely distinctive mechanical watch built around the interaction between its curved case, bombé dial and heavily curved crystal.
The brown dial is particularly impressive in person. Its sunburst finish already changes substantially with the light, but viewing it through the curved rectangular crystal exaggerates the effect further, creating a sense of depth that conventional photographs struggle to reproduce.
There are also small details that give the watch considerable personality. Orient Star’s familiar power reserve occupies the 12 o’clock position, yet the date is adjusted through a dedicated rectangular pusher on the upper-right side of the case—an unexpectedly elaborate solution for what would ordinarily be handled through the crown.
Its tonneau architecture also gives the watch an interesting place within Japanese design. The barrel-shaped case is far more commonly associated with Swiss watches, particularly the dramatic curved cases of Franck Muller and, more recently, Richard Mille.
