Model: Grand Seiko SBGR311 “Cookie” / Brown Whirlpool (Limited Edition of 1,300)

Overview:
The Grand Seiko SBGR311, affectionately known among collectors as the “Cookie,” is the brown-dial member of Grand Seiko’s celebrated Whirlpool family. Its extraordinary dial is formed from a spiral of 80 curved lines radiating outward from the center, creating the impression of a continuously moving whirlpool.

Viewed closely, the pattern reveals another layer of detail: the individual spirals are composed of repeating mosaics of the GS logo and the historic Daini Seikosha lightning-bolt emblem. The latter is particularly appropriate given the watch’s connection to Grand Seiko’s mechanical watchmaking heritage and the Shizukuishi Watch Studio, whose lineage traces back through Morioka Seiko Instruments to Daini Seikosha.

Unlike the blue SBGH267 and white SBGM235 Whirlpool variants, the SBGR311 features a warm brown dial with a more pronounced reflective character. Under changing light, the dial transitions from dark chocolate to copper and bronze tones, almost resembling a traditional sunburst finish beneath its intricate geometric pattern.

History:
The SBGR311 was introduced in 2018 as a limited edition celebrating the 20th anniversary of Grand Seiko’s modern 9S mechanical caliber family. It was produced in only 1,300 pieces and equipped with the specially decorated Caliber 9S68.

The reference belongs to a particularly memorable period of Grand Seiko dial design alongside two other watches that collectors commonly associate as the Whirlpool trio: the blue SBGH267 and white SBGM235. While each approaches the spiral motif differently, the brown SBGR311 distinguishes itself through the interaction between its deeply embossed pattern and warm metallic coloration.

The SBGR311 also represents an interesting transitional period for Grand Seiko. Released shortly after Grand Seiko became positioned as an independent brand in 2017, its dial carries the Grand Seiko name and GS emblem without the large Seiko signature that characterized earlier generations.

Closing Note:
The SBGR311 “Cookie” is one of the more unusual executions of Grand Seiko’s Whirlpool concept. Where the blue SBGH267 emphasizes color and the white SBGM235 emphasizes texture, the SBGR311 combines the intricate spiral pattern with a highly reflective brown surface that transforms dramatically under different lighting.

Its 80-line Whirlpool pattern, microscopic GS and Daini-inspired motifs, limited production of 1,300 pieces and commemorative 9S68 movement make the SBGR311 much more than an unusual dial variation. It represents a particularly creative period in modern Grand Seiko and remains one of the most distinctive brown dials the manufacture has produced.
