The Grand Seiko SBGH266 is one of the rarest and most luxurious executions of the celebrated Whirlpool design. Limited to only 150 pieces worldwide, the watch pairs Grand Seiko’s intricate Whirlpool-pattern dial with a solid 18-karat yellow gold case and the specially adjusted Hi-Beat Caliber 9S85.
The warm gold-colored dial is covered by the distinctive radiating Whirlpool texture, creating extraordinary depth as light moves across its surface. Viewed closely, the pattern reveals repeating Grand Seiko and historic Daini Seikosha-inspired motifs incorporated into the design.
History:
Released in 2018, the SBGH266 was created to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Grand Seiko’s modern 9S mechanical movement, first introduced in 1998. It formed part of a special series of anniversary watches celebrating two decades of Grand Seiko’s modern mechanical watchmaking.
For the SBGH266, Grand Seiko went considerably further than simply creating a precious-metal limited edition. Its Hi-Beat Caliber 9S85 was specially adjusted to meet the more stringent Grand Seiko Special Standard of +4/-2 seconds per day, compared with the regular Grand Seiko mechanical standard. This elevated level of regulation is proudly identified by the “SPECIAL” designation printed on the dial.
Production was restricted to just 150 examples, making the SBGH266 considerably rarer than its already collectible stainless-steel Whirlpool counterparts.
