Model: Seiko Presage SAWV003 Moonphase (1999)

Overview:

An exceptionally rare late-1990s Seiko Presage complication piece, the SAWV003 is defined by its unusual multi-layered dial architecture concealed beneath a hinged “trap window” crystal cover. Combining moonphase, calendar functions, and a directional solar compass system, it stands as one of Seiko’s most experimental quartz-era Presage executions.

History:

Believed to have been produced for a very short window around 1999, the SAWV003 was a Japan Domestic Market release positioned at a notably high MSRP for the time (~$1,200 USD). Its complex construction, limited production run, and unconventional design language make it one of the more obscure Seiko Presage references from the era. Unlike standard dress-focused Presage models, this piece reflects a period where Seiko explored hybrid instrument-style complications in quartz form, blending mechanical visual drama with practical timekeeping functions.

Closing Note: The SAWV003 is one of those Seiko references that exists outside the mainstream catalog narrative. Part complication showcase, part design experiment. With its unusual hinged crystal system, multi-function dial, and extremely limited production window, it represents a very specific era of Seiko creativity that is rarely seen today.
